Magistrates Court : Lewes
I managed to secure a “Supervised Visit” by the project manager of Jessops Construction Ltd into the Lewes Magistrates Court before it got demolished by the GBM UK Demolition company. It was designed by E.S.C.C. Built by G.L James of Heathfield and completed in 1986 and then officially opened by the late Diana, Princess of Wales in 1988.

Lewes Magistrates Court a Waste Of Money
The Lewes Magistrates Court closed its cell doors for the last time in March 2011 barely 25 years after it was built as it was not “Providing Value For Money” What a sad waste of money and history by The Ministry of Justice as it also ended centuries of local justice being delivered in Lewes.
But I do wonder as to why the building was not offered to the local Lewes police force as their new police station with its ready made cells, no man’s land, car parking, office space and a perfect central location! . . . Location Location Simples!
After nearly four years of planning applications and underhand wrangling, An application was approved with the help of a brown envelope or two! A demo notice was quickly served with the GBM UK Demolition company being brought in to demolish the building. In its place there will be a very expensively built Premier Inn and three retail/leisure units (14,000 sq ft) on the ground floor with 62 Premier Inn bedrooms on the upper two floors.
